Fatty acids are vital for vision Long-chain fatty acids play a key role in vision, especially in the retina of the eye and associated nerve synapses within the brain. The fatty acids included, in order of importance for the formulation, are:
- Omega-3 Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is of structural importance to the eye, particularly in helping to maintain the structure and integrity of the retina. The retina holds a higher percentage of DHA. The fatty acid content of lipid membranes of its rod cells contain up to 60% DHA.
- Omega-6 Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) and its metabolites also play an essential role in assisting in normal nerve function, tear production and volume. This fatty acid ensures an environment for optimum visual processing.
- Omega-3 Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) is thought to play more of a functional role, being important for moment-to-moment brain cell signaling, which supports visibility.
A look at Lutein
Lutein is a carotenoid that accumulates in macular of the eye, the area responsible for central vision and visual acuity. Along with zeaxanthin it forms the yellow macular pigment, which protects the macula from damaging photo-oxidative effects of bright light. Of the hundreds of carotenids that exist, lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two that are absorbed in the stomach to be used in the body. Zinc Zinc is found in high concentrations in the retina, it is known to help protect against the progressive damage to the macular caused by sunlight, pollution and smoke. These free radicals are major factors in reducing visibility. Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Bilberry Extract
The equavision formulation includes a synergistic combination of Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Bilberry extract. As our eyes may be vulnerable and overexposed to free radicals, these additional antioxidants were added for their protective effects. In particular, the lens of the eye has a high requirement for Vitamin C. Bilberry also contains anthocyanosides, which helps in maintaining the integrity of the capillary walls that serve the eyes, thereby helping to maintain good blood flow. Our bodies cannot produce these nutrients, therefore a specific supplement may be important for eye health especially as we get older. Intake
The equavision formulation is for adults only. The recommended intake is just 1 capsule a day, however up to 3 capsules a day can be taken. We encourage supplementing around mealtimes to enhance absorption of the fatty acids and additional antioxidants into your system.
